Frankincense and Myrrh

At this time of year, we are reminded of the reason for Christmas which evokes certain memories, sounds and smells for all of us. Frankincense and myrrh are two of my favorites, so I thought I'd share a bit of information about them. Enjoy! ~ Susan

The importance of a chemical-free crib mattress

No single other purchase for an infant will make as great an impact in the well-being of a baby than his or her crib mattress. Typically used until a newborn infant reaches toddlerhood, crib mattresses are heavily utilized as the child sleeps for 10 to 14 hours per day. While sleeping, a newborn’s still developing and fragile respiratory system is usually separated only by a crib sheet or mattress pad from the surface of the mattress, where traditional mattresses can leech out residual chemicals from the manufacturing process. These chemicals include phthalates, recently banned from plastic baby bottles, teethers, and toys, and a class of compounds called PBDEs, commonly used as fire retardants, but which have been banned in 11 states due to their deleterious health effects in animal studies.

IMPORTANT: Delta Enterprise Crib Recall Notice

Cypriana wants parents to be informed and aware of any products that might be harmful to infants. We recently received word that the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) partnered with Delta Enterprise Corporation of New York to voluntarily recall and replace missing safety pegs on 985,000 drop side cribs that were made in Taiwan or Indonesia. When the safety pegs in the base of each leg of the crib are missing from the lower track, the crib locks can disengage and detach if lowered below the peg hole, creating a hazardous gap. This gap can lead to the entrapment and suffocation of an infant or toddler.

An 8-month-old child became entrapped and suffocated when the drop side of the crib detached and safety pegs were not installed, according to the CPSC. Delta Corp and the CPSC are urging parents and caregivers to immediately stop using cribs that are missing a safety peg on any leg of recalled cribs with date codes ranging from 1995 through December 2005, plus one model (4624) made in 2007. The model numbers are located on the top of the mattress support board. Contact Delta either by telephone or web site for a free easy-to-install repair kit.
